The American International School of Johannesburg (AISJ), South Africa, is taking greater strides towards being even more inclusive on both campuses (Johannesburg and Pretoria) by expanding its ability to serve students with cognitive and developmental disabilities, including students requiring an individualized or modified curriculum. The expansion of the inclusion program will result in a community more closely reflecting the range of learners in the world at large and aligns with the school’s aspiration to be an inclusive school.

Starting in August 2024, AISJ is opening up individual pathways for students who require a Life Skills approach to their education. The Life Skills Pathway (LSP) is an intensive and individualized level of support (beyond the typical Learning Support Services that AISJ will continue to provide). Students receiving this new level of support will work in very small student-teacher ratios (1 teacher to 2-3 students). AISJ is also thrilled to be able to include siblings who could not have been supported in the past, and therefore keep families together while expanding enrollment.
